Do Aur Do Pyaar REVIEW: Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi’s cheating love life will leave you in splits; alas the ‘chilly sauce’ is missing

Do Aur Do Pyaar is an unconventional love story of a married couple who cheat on each other to later cheat on their affair partners and get frisky (iykyk!). The film is about Kavya (Vidya Balan) and Ani (Pratik Gandhi) and how they find love outside their marriage as the spark their relationship once had dies over the years. While Kavya finds comfort in the arms of photographer Vikram (played by Sendhil Ramamurthy), Ani spends quality time on Nora, aka Ruby (played by Ileana D’Cruz). 

Will Kavya and Ani – who ran away and got married over a decade ago, fall in love with each other again? Will they get a happily ever after? To know these answers you need to watch the Shirsha Guha Thakurta directorial and for some light and even emotional moments. 

What Works

The story is something the Indian audience hasn’t seen before and is sure to intrigue the masses – especially the young adults. Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi’s chemistry, body language and dialogue delivery are another thing that works well for the film. 

What Doesn’t Work

The film lacks a wow factor. We wish the makers had used some ‘chilly sauce’ just as Kavya used on multiple occasions while enjoying Chicken 65. Scenes being stretched and unwanted wide-angle shots of the closeups we have just seen are a few of the things that will tick you off.

Technical Analysis

Story

The story is an unconventional love story of an estranged couple, who live together but are in love with other people. Inspired by Azazel Jacobs’ 2017 romcom The Lovers, this Shirsha Guha Thakurta directorial is a typical romcom filled with situational comedy scenes, some cheezy one-liners and romance we expect from young lovers. While the story is complete, there seems to be something lacking, just like the spark in Kavya and Ani’s marriage before they go to her home town for a funeral.

Script & Dialogues

The script – written by Suprotim Sengupta Amrita Bagchi Eisha Chopra, is decent and has no loose ends. The film’s dialogues – though not hard-hitting, will not make you cringe. They will make you chuckle and maybe even laugh at certain points. 

Direction

Shirsha Guha Thakurta has done a commendable job behind the cameras. She captures the emotions of the characters and even makes sure viewers have an enjoyable time by playing with the focus at times.

Editing

Edited by Bardroy Barretto, Do Aur Do Pyaar isn’t a lengthy watch but could have done will a few more cuts for a better film. 

Music

Do Aur Do Pyaar’s music is nice. While you are sure to enjoy it while the movie plays, you may not retain their names, tunes or even lyrics once you are out of the theatre. While Jaazbati Hai Dil has music by Lost Stories (DJs) and is sung by Armaan Malik, and Ananya Birla, Tu Hai Kahaan is crooned by Lucky Ali and has music and lyrics by The Local Train.

The film’s background music is loud during several instances and will detach you from what’s happening on screen. The Bollywood classic used in the Vidya Balan-Pratik Gandhi starrer will take you back in time. Do Aur Do Pyaar also features music by Subhajit Mukherjee, Abhishek-Ananya and When Chai Met Toast.

Star Performances

The stars of this film, without a doubt, are Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi. While Vidya shines as Kavya – a dentist belonging to a Tamil family filled with doctors, Pratik nails the nuances of a Bengali who sacrifices his dreams for his family. It’s impressive seeing Gandhi essay a serious role on the big screen less than a month after he left all in splits with his hilarious portrayal as Pratik ‘Pinku’ Goradia in Madgaon Express. They both deliver believable performances – be it while they start tearing off each other’s clothes or arguing with each other like any other married couple.

Besides sharing amazing chemistry, Vidya and Pratik also manage to make sure the spark is present when they are with their character’s affair partners – Vikram and Nora, respectively.  Sendhil Ramamurthy as Vikram lacks flavour while Ileana D’Cruz as Nora is a spicy chilly who knows how to get what she wants. 

The supporting cast – like Kavya’s family, will make you laugh but aren’t anything out of the ordinary. 

Conclusion

If you want to watch a light-hearted comedy, head to theatres and check out this Vidya Balan-Pratik Gandhi film that has the couple cheating on their affair partners with their spouses. It’s fun and will make you laugh. It will help you forget your worries for at least 2 hours.
